Heart Rainbow Hexagon Blanket CAL

July 26, 2019

I am super excited to show you this new blanket design for our new Crochet Along! We are making hexagons and sewing them together to make these cute hearts. The blanket is designed to look like a bunch of hearts sprinkling down. And the hearts are in rainbow colors. Here’s a sneak peek of the blanket. The CAL is currently on (July 26, 2019-September 13, 2019)…so this blog post will be updated accordingly.

The Hexagons

Solid Hexagons

To make these hexagons, I have modified the hexagon slightly. There are also color changes that are made. Doing the modified version will get you in the habit of how each row is made and it will also make color changing a bit easier for you. Below is a pictorial of how I made the changes for the hexagon using a join similar to the “invisible join”.

Make a chain circle. Ch 3, sl into first ch.
ROUND 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into chain circle, ch 2. (ch 2 makes corner sp) *[Dc 2, ch 2 into chain circle]*repeat* four more times. (6 [dc ch 2] sections). Sl st into top of ch 3.

*This is where you start using the invisible join*
ROUND 2: Pull loop up to slightly taller than dc stitches. Use this loop like your normal yarn and continue making a double crochet.

Hold on to the loop on your hook, yo with the long loop.

Insert hook into corner sp, yo pull through (three loops on hook-one normal loop, long loop, top of long loop that you’re holding onto). Yo pull through two loops, (two loops left on hook-normal loop and top of long loop you are holding on to).

Finish the rest of the stitch. Yo, pull through two loops, (one loop on hook remaining).

This is the invisible stitch and counts as the first double crochet for Round 2. Your rounds will now start with this stitch.

Continue the rest of the section. Dc into the next two st, dc into corner sp, ch 2, *[dc into same corner sp, dc into the next two st, dc into corner sp, ch 2]*repeat* 4 more times.

When you get to the end, locate the top of the invisible stitch. Sl st into the top of the invisible st.

ROUND 3: Invisible join for first dc, dc in four sts across, dc into corner sp, ch 2, *(dc into the same corner sp, dc into four sts across, dc into corner sp, ch 2)*repeat* 4 more times. (6 [dc 6, ch 2) sections) Sl st into top of invisible join st. Fasten off, leave a long tail (approximately 8″)

Multi Color Hexagons

I recommend you start the multi-colored hexagons with the lightest colors first. This sample has two colors with one section pink and the rest (five sections) teal.

With the lightest color first (pink), make a chain circle, ch 3, sl into first ch.
ROUND 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into chain circle, ch 2, dc 2, ch 2 into chain circle.

We will do the color change similar to the invisible join stitch. With new color (teal), make a loop long enough as a dc crochet is tall.

In chain circle, pull teal long loop through from the back to the front. Slip into pink ch and tighten pink loop. You should have two chains in pink and it switches over to the teal. DO NOT cut the pink yarn. Set aside and work with the teal yarn.

Like the invisible join stitch, you will now work with the teal long loop. Hold onto the loop tail in the back tightly, make sure it stays in place. Don’t forget to hold onto the top of the long loop on your hook, yo with the teal long loop, insert hook into pink chain circle, yo pull up a loop…

(three loops on hook-one regular, one long loop, and the top of the long loop you are holding onto).

Yo pull through two loops (two loops on hook-normal loop, long loop your holding onto)

Finish the stitch, yo, pull through two. (one loop left on your hook) This is the invisible join and is your first dc for this section.

You can tighten the pink yarn, but it is okay if it is a little loose, you can tighten it back up when you come back around to it.

Continue making the rest of the sections. Dc into the chain circle, ch 2, *[dc 2, ch 2 into chain circle]*repeat* three more times. (6 [dc 2, ch 2] sections) Sl st into the top of the invisible join stitch.

Turn your work, slip st into corner sp. Continue crocheting sections starting with the invisible join stitch, which counts as first dc.

ROUND 2: Invisible join st, dc into the next two stitches, dc into corner sp, ch 2, *[dc into samecorner sp, dc into the next two stitches, dc into corner sp, ch 2]*repeat* two more times.

Switch to pink yarn by yo with pink and sl into teal chain. Tighten teal yarn, leave tail.

Continue with pink yarn using the same invisible join method, notice how the pink yarn is only one strand. Hold on to the loop that is in the teal ch, yo with pink strand, insert hook into corner sp.

Yo pull through (three loops on your hook), yo pull through two (two loops on your hook).

Finish stitch, yo pull through two. This is how the color change should look. Finish the rest of the sections to finish round 2, dc into the next two stitches, dc into corner sp, ch 2, dc into same corner sp, dc into the next two st, dc into the corner sp, ch 2, join with sl st at the top of the teal invisible join st. (6 [dc 4, ch 2] sections)

ROUND 3: Turn your work. Make invisible join st into corner sp, ch 2, dc into same corner sp, dc into the next four sts, dc into corner sp, ch 2, dc into same corner sp, dc into the next four sts, dc into corner sp, ch 1.

Switch to teal yarn, yo with teal, sl st into pink.

This outer part is different. You must only ch 1 with pink and then ch 1 with teal. This will help with the shape of your heart when you start sewing your hexagons together.

Continue round 3 by starting with invisible stitch join, yo with teal yarn. Insert hook into corner sp (three loops on hook).

Yo pull through two loops (two loops on hook)

Yo pull through two loops (one loop on hook). Invisible st is made.

This is how the join will look. Make sure you can see the pink ch, and teal ch. You will need these chains when sewing the hexagons together. This will also keep your hexagons lined up properly.

Finish the round. Dc into the next four sts, dc into corner sp, ch 2, *[dc into corner sp, dc into the next four sts, dc into corner sp, ch 2]*repeat* two more times. Sl st into top of pink invisible stitch. Fasten off, leave 8″ tail.

HALF HEXAGON

-Color changes are the same technique for half hexagons. *When doing the color change on the outer row, you must do the two different chain corner chains.*
-Round 2-3, the first and last stitch will have a two stitch increase.

****Be aware that some of these half hexagons will be rotated. And you can only make them in one direction. So be sure that the color order is correct when turned in the direction needed****

ROUND 1: Make chain circle, ch 3, sl st into first ch, dc into chain circle, ch 2, dc 2 into chain circle, ch 2, 2 into chain circle, ch 3, turn.
ROUND 2: Inc, dc into the next, dc into corner sp, (this is a section-total of four dc), ch 2, dc in corner sp, dc in the next two sts, dc into corner sp, ch 2, dc into corner sp, dc into next st, inc in the last. Ch 3, turn.
Round 3: Inc, dc into the next three sts, dc into corner sp, ch 2, dc into corner sp, dc into next four st, dc into corner sp, ch 2, dc into corner sp, dc into the next three sts, inc in the last. Fasten off with 8″ tail.
